Biography

Sophia Duray is a soprano, voice professor, and Baroque dancer based in Chicagoland. She is known for her expressive artistry and deep commitment to Historical Performance. With a passion for music that bridges centuries, Sophia brings early music to life through performances that connect past and present.

Sophia performs with ensembles in the United States and Canada, recently participating in the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, Boston Early Music Festival Fringe, and the Lexington Bach Festival. She frequently works as a soloist and chorister with leading Early Music ensembles including Apollo’s Fire, Bella Voce, Bloomington Early Music, and Alchymy Viols. Sophia will also make new appearances with The New York Philharmonic and Sphere Born this season.

Equally dedicated to education, Sophia teaches a private voice studio and as an applied voice instructor at Valparaiso University. She works with students aged 8 and older, coaches vocal ensembles, and has held leadership and administrative roles in academic music programs. Her teaching style emphasizes healthy technique, collaborative musicianship, and inclusive learning environments that encourage trust and artistic growth.

Sophia holds a Master of Arts in Historical Performance Practice from Case Western Reserve University where she studied voice and Baroque Dance from Feuillet-Beauchamp notation with Julie Andrijeski, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Valparaiso University, where she graduated magna cum laude and received numerous honors, including the Carol Bremer Angerer Award in Vocal Excellence and the university’s Concerto Competition award.
